September 30, 2013

Greetings Gauchos! We hope that you are getting into the swing of things as you begin the 2013/2014 academic year. Here at Career Services, we are extremely excited about what’s in store for you this year. Whether you are just starting to think about your future career, or you already know where you’re heading and need some assistance getting there, Career Services has programming and resources to assist you with that process. New and returning students alike, check out what our counselors and directors have to say about what you can look forward to at Career Services this Fall Quarter:

“Welcome to campus, Gauchos!  Whether you are coming to attend UCSB for the first time or are returning to resume your studies, we are glad you are here.  In fact, we are so glad that we have a quarter that is jam-packed with workshops, career fairs, and info sessions to help you figure out your career path – or to help you to achieve your goals.  Check out our calendar of events and also take a look into GauchoLink to get the full slate of employer information sessions.  Then all you have to do is show up!  And, of course, come by Career.  We’ll be happy to see you!” –Molly Steen, Career Counselor

“Welcome new and returning Gauchos! I hope you made the most of this summer through internships, international experiences, or volunteering and also managed to have some fun. We have a great year planned for you at Career Services so you will definitely want to take advantage of our calendar of events. Students often ask: ‘When should I visit Career Services?’ My answer is always: NOW! Why? It is a process to explore your interests and career choices, gain experience, and get connected. We are here to help you throughout the process with tons of useful events and resources. (Updated industry-specific internship handouts are coming to the Career Resource Room and website soon!!) Even if you are not sure what Career Services is, or what you may want to do with your life after college, it’s great to learn where we are located and how we can help you along the way. Come visit us early and often!” –Brittany Manzer, Career Counselor

“Welcome new and fellow Gauchos!  To kick off the 2013-2014 academic year, Career Services is hosting a brand new event called mockStar on Thu, Oct 10 from 2-4pm at the Career Services Courtyard.  Complementing our quarterly resume+ event, mockStar is intended to help those students who wish to gain more experience with interviewing.  Engage with real world employers by participating in quick 10-minute practice interviews and learn how to incorporate the STAR method! Bring your résumé, dress professionally and take advantage of the valuable feedback from experienced professionals in leading industries!  What better way to get ready for the competitive Accounting recruitment process or upcoming two-day Fall Career Fair!  Come shine at mockStar and feel more confident about the interview process.” – Jo Ann Villanueva-Salvador, Career Counselor

“Happy Fall ’13 all the Gauchos! Here we go again; Career Services has big plans for the coming school year in terms of developing your Professional Self. Career exploration and job search strategies are what we are all about. I guarantee you, your experience during and after UCSB will be much better if you make use of our services and knowledgeable staff. If you have never been in before, come on in to our Career Resource Room and our career peers will give you a tour of our resources and how to use them. Hope to see you soon!” –Lily Maestas, Career Counselor

“Welcome back Gauchos! We’ve got an amazing fall quarter planned for you with some new events and a “sold out career fair.” That’s right, the fall career fair is sold out already so that means that there will be tons of employers looking to hire you for full-time and internship positions on campus in the fall. Don’t miss out! Also, check out our calendar for our new mock interview event that will help you prepare for your job/internship search.” –Emily White, Associate Director

“I strongly believe that students should visit Career Services early, and certainly no later than their sophomore year. We provide individual career counseling/advising, workshops, internship assistance, and career fairs and programs—services designed specifically for underclassmen.  Competition for good jobs, particularly in certain fields, is stiff therefore it’s a really good idea to seek help early with choosing a major or career and preparing for it. Career Services can advise you on how to become a strong candidate for your field of interest. You and only you are responsible for your future. You are at UCSB not just to gain a valuable education and but also to prepare yourself so that you can launch a successful career, lead an enriching life, and become a better citizen. Like most students, I’m sure you would love to have landed a career or have been accepted to graduate school by the time you graduate. In order to accomplish this, we hope you will make Career a regular part of your UCSB experience. We’re here to help!” – Ignacio Gallardo, Director

Now that you’ve got the inside track on the amazing activities that are coming up this quarter, we hope that you will drop by Career Services early and often. As you can tell, our enthusiastic staff members can’t wait to assist you with your career exploration and goals. Welcome back, Gauchos! We look forward to seeing you soon!
